A look at the new Thundercats

HOOOOOO!!The Thundercats phenomenon was a bit before my time, but I can see its legacy throughout today’s pop culture even without having seen the original series. A modern reboot of the cartoon is slated to hit the airwaves later this year and the first images of the new series have found their way onto the interwebs. Hit the jump for two new pictures of the anime-styled cast of the new Thundercats.

This image was taken at the recent 2011 London Toy Fair despite strict security protocols (you can insert your “many Bothans died” jokes here). The show, which is being produced by Japan’s Studio 4°C, is obviously going for an anime look in its character design, moreso than any Western show I’ve seen before. Since this image is a bootleg photo of a promotional poster it’s a bit blurry. After Bleeding Cool leaked the photo online, Warner Brothers released an official photo that shows the characters in action poses.

I notice that Lion-O lost the gauntlet-thing he was rocking in the Toy Fair poster and that Tygra is sporting a gun in addition to that wicked-looking whip. I’m not really sure what to make of Cheetara though. She seems kind of gaunt and haggard looking in both pictures, like a homeless crack addict or something. An attractive homeless crack addict that will no doubt inspire confusing feelings in a new generation of boys, but a homeless crackhead nonetheless.

Overall I like the design of the characters and as a devout fan of nunchaku I hope all those snazzy weapons will be more than just decorations like in the original series. Panthro really needs to get his Bruce Lee on with those bad boys.

I can see how the new styling makes the characters more up-to-date, but I think they lost a good deal of the show’s mojo by making it seem much more generic.
(And of course they made Cheetara look like an emaciated super-model with breast implants instead of the muscular heroine she should be. Nobody wants to watch self-confident women.)

I watched thundercats with my older brothers. It was an epic cartoon that was perfect the way it was.
